How do I prepare my site?
Well-prepared soil allows the grass roots to take hold
quickly and establish efficient water and nutrient uptake.
Strong roots and healthy grasses are better able to repel
pests and recuperate from stressors such as drought or
nutrient imbalances. 1.
Weed control
Growing from sod reduces the necessity of completely
eradicating weeds. The sod plants will out-compete many
weeds with rapid growth. Till the soil 6"-8" deep to
loosen and aerate the soil, remove weeds, and other
debris.
2. Prepare the soil
While it is often not
necessary, soil can be prepared in advance to improve
composition, nutrients, and water retention. The ideal
soil pH is 5.5-7.0. Soils that are too acidic (less than
5.5) can be treated with lime; alkaline soils (greated
than 7.0) can be treated with sulfur. If your site has
never been planted before, a professional soil analysis
may help ensure your sod is successful. We can help you
determine if this is necessary.
3. Grade and irrigate
A 1-2% grade allows water
runoff away from buildings (a 1ft dropoff for every 50ft
of turf). Install your irrigation system, do your final
grading, and irrigate the site for 1 week.
